H edgehogs seem to live their lives according to the same rules as frogs; if it's smaller than you it's food so you can eat it; if it's bigger flight is indicated; but if it's the same size then it's time to make your mind up. Is the other party the same or the opposite gender? If, as in the video above, they are ⚣ then a fight is inevitable. Fights can appear quite viscious but I have never seen blood spilt or any actual injury. What tends to happen is the weaker ♂ will curl into a ball and ride out the storm while the stronger gives the weaker a thorough shoving around. The stronger will then go about his business for a bit while the weaker stays rolled up until the stronger returns to deliver further punishment. Once the dominant ♂ gets bored of this he will go on his way and the victim will, after a cautious interlude, unroll, give himself a shake and go about his business, seemingly unharmed and generally in the opposite direction. ⚢ seem indifferent to eachother and I have never observed any interaction. But ⚤ triggers courtship behaviour.
