Thomas HESKETH [1853-1917] had two wives; [i] Amelia Anne Sanderson b 1853 Preston, d 1884, m. 1 April 1875; [ii] Elizabeth England m. 1887 from whom we descend.


Elizabeth England and Thomas Hesketh

Thomas Hesketh b. 2 February 1853 Lytham St Annes, Lancashire d. 4 October 1917 Lytham St Annes married first Amelia Anne Sanderson with whom he had five children, only three surviving beyond infancy. Amelia died aged 31 giving birth to her fifth child. Their children were;

  • John Ernest b. 10 April 1876 d. 4 July 1960
  • William Orme b. 24 June 1878 d. 5 February 1961
  • Arthur Harold b. July 1880 d. 1880
  • Amelia Annie b. 1881 still alive in 1901
  • Thomas Jr b. March 1884 d. 13 July 1884

Thomas Hesketh married his second wife Elizabeth ENGLAND in 1887. Elizabeth England was a daughter (there were 16 children) of John Humphrey England who ran a very successful potato importing business. We grew up hearing of them as “the famous potato people”. The business was in the family until the 2000's (see Wikipedia John Humphrey England) Thomas and Eliabeth's seven children were;

  • Stanley* b. 2 August 1888 d. 4 November 1969 Weston Super Mare
  • Gordon b. July 1889 d. 14 Aug 1889 (3 weeks old)
  • Thomas Humphrey b. March 1892 d. 28 January 1919 killed by IRA. Buried in Cathcart, Glasgow.
  • Robert Roy b. January 1893 d. October 1921 suicide buried in Yatton, near Weston Super Mare where he was living at the time.
  • Marjery Elizabeth b. 5 November 1894 celebrated her 90th Birthday 1984 d. April 1985
  • Charles England b. 1896 d. 21 December 1964 married Joan ? 1960.
  • Beatrice Alice b. 1897 died young.

Stanley was close to this brother and named his own son Tom, who was born soon after his brother died, in his memory. This Stanley was our grandfather who married Vera Halliday with whom he had two children; Uncle Tom and our mother Elizabeth. See HESKETH 2.
