Married PANTON

  • Alice Flint (18??-????)

EVELYN:  Alice, Mrs Panton, I did know, but not well. I stayed with her at her house in Tynemouth, near Newcastle. She was, when I knew her, living in a large house overlooking the river at the back. She was very much a lady of the old school, with rather a grand manner. She was not very tall, but slender, with grey hair dressed like Queen Mary's. Most of the time she lay on the sofa in her drawing room with her little dog on her lap. She had a good cook and impeccable parlour maid. Her husband, Mr Panton, was a colliery owner. His portrait showed him with a fierce black beard. Alice had the portrait of great grandfather as an old man, and it was a very good portrait. I believe she became quite senile before she died, as did her sister Amy - probably through their mother, Aunt Catherine - for there was never any kind of senility in the other Flint families.
