Apprenticed aboard British Princess

10.xii.1895 - 13.iii.1900

JUNE 1898
Saturday, 11th Hove out of dock at 2.15 this morning and towed to Tuskar. All day spent in getting things “Ship shape”.
Sunday, 12th Tug left us at 8 a.m. and sent boy aboard for letters. Started getting sail on. Wish I had stayed at home! now.
Monday, 13th Picked watches, I being in the Second Mate's. Hauling yards all over the place. Getting everything lashed. Stale!
Tuesday, 14th Going to start teakwood today. Scrubbing all day. I wish the duice I hadn't come.
Wednesday, 15th Spoke the ‘Sir Henry Lorrence’ homeward bound. Scrubbing.
Thursday, 16th Cleaning up everything.
Friday, 17th Grand breeze. Square yards.
Saturday, 18th
Lat 43°12’N
Long 16°3’W
Grand weather. All hands are very decent except the Bosun, who is a very low character, and a terrible bum.
Sunday, 19th Still a splendid fair wind, and sailing well. Beautiful day.
Monday, 20th Splendid breeze going along well. Boxing forid in the evening.
Tuesday, 21st All the time square yards. Fine day. All the same it is blooming stale compared with home. I think I was an ass to come this voyage, and trust it won't be long. Today we had fresh meat, and we had to throw it overboard, it was so mouldy.
Wednesday, 22nd All hands aloft. Friging about from one job to another.
Thursday, 23rd All the way down we have had a splendid fair wind. Square yards the whole time. All the same it is pretty stale. I feel this passage much worse than any of the others. The novelty has worn off now, I suppose.
Friday, 24th Trades not so strong today, but going along well. Working aloft.
Saturday, 25th
Lat 26°46’N
Long 55°17’W
Getting new life-boat sorted up, painted and cleaned. Terribly hot, but that is to be expected down here. Can't get home out of my head at all.
Sunday, 26th Terribly hot today. Slung hammock on Fo'c'stle head and basked all day. Caught fair sized dolphin by the stemline.
Monday, 27th Our food is getting reduced. Nothing for breakfast now. Fitting out life-boat. Have made up my mind that this is going to be my last voyage in Sailing Ship.
Tuesday, 28th Stoning planks under life-boats, and painting new boat.
Wednesday, 29th Right abreast Gape Verde Islands, which are about 50 miles on the Port beam. Captain Scott was speaking to me for about an hour while I was at the wheel today. We seem to be getting on better now. Mrs. Scott also condescended to say “Good morning”, the first time for about a year. Washing out Starboard life-boat with costic soda.
Thursday, 30th Still good wind. This afternoon we sighted a ship away ahead just on the horizon. We must have gained on her, but at length she disappeared.
