| Thursday 26th | Today started work at 7 a.m. Got breakfast a 10 a.m. Started again at 10.45 and finished for dinner at 3 p.m. That was when they sjournaltoped unloading, but we had plenty to do till 6. | ||
| ⚪ | Friday 27th | We had same cargo working hours. I have been working hard. I have the whole charge of the Fore hatch. It is a difficult hatch to work. About 3 p.m. our crane broke so had to sjournaltop. Tonight two of the ‘Argo’ (Greenock) fellows came aboard. | |
| Saturday 28th | I have been working fore hatch all day, and feel pretty tired now, after that we had to wash down and tidy up a bit. | ||
| Sunday, 29th | We all intended going ashore today, and were all dressed ready when the mate came and said three of us had to stay by the boat and were to get Good Friday instead. So I decided to stay, but all the same it was a disappointment. | ||
| Monday 30th | Been working the coal. We have to winch the whole 120 tons ourselves into lighters. They won't take it on the wharf. It is hard work [- ? -] it. | ||
| Tuesday 31st | Got breakfast at 8 a.m. and worked straight on without a sjournaltop till 3 p.m. The whole time without a seconds rest. Almost finished the coal now, only 15 tons left. Tonight there was a very severe thunder and lightning storm. | ||

| Wednesday 1st | While taking dinner today we heard a terrific report, and looking over the side we discovered a Chilean man-of-war encircled in steam. Its boiler burst, and killed 12 men and wounded 18 others. They were brought ashore in a lighter. | ||
| Thursday 2nd | The shore people won't work today. It is another “Feast day”. So we bent all sail, except the courses. | ||
| Friday 3rd | This was a holiday aboard, and also ashore. I went ashore with Scottie, and had a good time. We went all over the city and had a good feast in the bargain. Most of the shops are shut though. | ||
| Saturday 4th | Instead of the men working as usual this morning, they all stood on the quay and said they would not work till “Judas was burnt”. This is a life size image of Judas, which is burnt at the yard arm on the naval station on the hill. After he was burnt, they started work as usual. | ||
| Sunday, 5th | Had to get up and hoist the flags, and in the afternoon we took the mate ashore, and had a little time ashore ourselves. Had a feast and bought some fruit, then oame down to the boat and had a chat with some others. | ||
| Monday, 6th | Started work as usual, and have been working cargo all day. “Argo's” fellows are aboard tonight, so we had plenty of singing and spinning yarns. | ||
| ⚪ | Tuesday, 7th | Today we had to go ashore 8 times for the Old Man. Never having a minutes rest. He always sent us journalback to work cargo. Have been working very hard at the iron in the main hatch, and taking in barley at the after hatch. | |
| Wednesday, 8th | I have been in the boat all day, so got out of working cargo nicely. Today I met with a kind of an accident in the main hold. A large beam of timber falling on my knee from the tweendecks. It swole to a great height and caused me for a while to hop about like a hen. | ||
