C aptain Arthur David Linklater , Master mariner, was my grandfather. He was always known in the family as Dum and signed his letters to his son thus. Old habits dying hard I continue to think of him, and often refer to him in these pages as Dum, but see further in the ‘Biography’ section. As well as HIS BIOGRAPHY this section of the website dedicated to Dum contains his Sailing Journals covering three voyages as an apprentice aboard the barque BRITISH PRINCESS 1895-1900. [His chart of the voyages is shown above.] As Dum's Journals are unpublished, access to the bulk of them is restricted to immediate family and requires a password; follow the instructions if you get that far. There is also a lot of background information on pilotage of the River Hooghli [Dum was a Hooghli Pilot], sailing round Cape Horn [see chart above], a nautical glossary, the great age of sail, The Camel Problem , and much else besides. There is also a detailed Biography Contents Page with page by page links, as much for my own use as anybody else's. Welcome aboard!

Samuel Johnson

“No man will be a sailor who has contrivance enough to get himself into a jail; for being in a ship is being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned... A man in a jail has more room, better food, and commonly better company.”
