EVELYN: MARY BELL (Mrs Roxburgh) [i.e. Naena and Evelyn's mother]. Only a word or two about her youth, because you knew her pretty well. This year, as I write, [so, 1962] it is just thirty years ago since she died. After her mother died she and Alicia and Auntie Allie lived with Aunt Alicia. [I don't understand who these people ARE!] I can't think they were very happy, for kind as Aunt Alicia meant to be, she wasn't the mothering sort. When she went to Australia the second time the three young women bought a house in a small town in the south of Scotland, called Moffat, and lived in it during the winter, letting it for the summer months, furnished. When it was let they stayed with Amelia or friends, or took a cheap furnished house in or near Edinburgh. While at Moffat I do think that Auntie Allie did a good deal of the cooking and was more or less normal and happy. They hadn't much money but seemed to be happy.

My father was coming to see Mother then and she used to meet him at the main line station (Beatock) some miles away. He stayed at the local hotel. They had two cats, Dick and Beauty, who used to lie in one another's arms, they were such friends. Cats seem to be a family inheritance! Aunt Alicia used to visit them at Moffat. I remember Mother once telling us that Aunt A. had just decanted four bottles of rum and put them, without stoppers, on the dining room sideboard, when the parson called! One of the nice things about Aunt Alicia was that she enjoyed a decent drink in reasonable quantities.

The date of the marriage was 19 September 1893.
